Donald used to boast to his friends how he could work at a full-time job and get intoxicated almost every night. Sadly, after engaging in this destructive lifestyle for just about two-and-a-half years, he started to have various alcohol related problems.

As an example, he had a real difficult time getting up for work because he felt so exhausted when he got up. Furthermore, virtually every morning Donald suffered through a dreadful hangover. It was apparent that the combination of his hangovers and his lack of energy did not make it easy for him to get up and feel motivated to go to work. To make matters worse, roughly a week ago he received his third drunk driving arrest in the past year-and-a-half.

To complicate things further, at his place of employment his last two performance appraisals were less than acceptable. And finally, his relationship with his girlfriend had gotten worse due to his depression, angry outbursts, financial difficulties, and his lack of patience.

Though Donald was only twenty-three years old, he frankly began to look like he was in his early forties. Unfortunately, this is what abusive and unhealthy drinking can do to a person. And in truth he comprehended that he was suffering from the adverse outcomes of alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse and that he was too young to squander his life to abusive and careless drinking. So at first he tried to drink in moderation. Sadly, he soon found out that he lost his self control after consuming his first drink. Since this was an incident that was repeated every time he went to a bar to drink, this troubled him greatly. In truth, he began to wonder if he was displaying some of the stages of alcoholism.

After going over his alcohol drinking problems and his irresponsible drinking with his girlfriend, he eventually decided to schedule an appointment to see his healthcare professional. When Donald saw his healthcare practitioner, he actually mentioned that he has been drinking in a hazardous manner, that he may be exhibiting behavior characteristic of the various alcoholism stages, and that he wants to quit drinking. He said that drinking in moderation does not work well for him and consequently, he wants to learn how he can create an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Donald also told his healthcare practitioner about his depression and how this mental health issue was negatively affecting his relationship with his lady friend. His doctor referred Donald to Doctor Jackson, a drug and alcohol addiction specialist, who convinced Donald to register in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic as an in-patient for alcohol detoxification and alcohol treatment. Fortunately, Donald would also be able to get medical treatment for his depression at this facility.

After four months of intensive rehab, Donald left the in-patient treatment facility and continued his recovery via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and via outpatient counseling. Encouraged to change his life in a more positive way, Donald joined a fitness center and started working out two or three times per week. Within four months Donald was a new person. He was not depressed anymore, he was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, and most important of all, he maintained his sobriety for many months. He also became more patient, he did not resort to angry outbursts, and he became a more loving person in his relationship with his lady friend. In short, getting and staying sober was the best decision Donald had ever made.
