A Health Teacher Instructs Her Students About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged private high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already established a reputation as a person with educational methods that stimulated and encouraged her pupils to learn and to think.
For instance, one Friday morning she addressed her pupils and said the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a more broad-based standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the best known signs of alcoholism from a more specific perspective."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely demonstrate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the more likely it is that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then informed the class that each person would be responsible for researching four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her results to the rest of the class via a twenty-five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top ten alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the students in her classroom that after she assesses the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her students to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 10 or 20 seconds, virtually every student in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, just about every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, namely, "Do you feel really ill when you quit drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her students why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcohol addiction. She underlined the fact that the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol all of a sudden stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the buzz manifested by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about an important social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
